Picking and Fitting the Dress ShirtNo matter the price or quality, if a dress shirt does not fit comfortably around the collar, it is useless. To determine if the collar fits properly, button your top button and see if you can comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your neck. Generally, finer shirt makers add half an inch to the correct size to account for shrinkage. If your shirt fits absolutely perfectly when you first try it one, you should move a half an inch up in collar size so that you will be able to wear the shirt for years to come.
The width of the shirt should be comfortable enough so that there is no tension across the shirt when sitting down. The length should be long enough so that when you reach your arms over your head, the shirt tail should not come out of your pants. When determining the correct cuff circumference, if you can slide your hand through the barrel of the buttoned cuff, it is too large. Sleeve length should be so that you can straighten or bend your arm without the cuff moving away from your wrist.
Finer points:
The tips of your collar should always remain in contact with the body of the shirt. Also, a proper fitting jacket should always cover the very end points of one's collar.
